Generations of artists have explored the beauties and terrors of the ocean, reflecting on the experiences of those human and non-human who have lived and lost their lives among the waves.John Akomfrah’s iconic three-channel film installation Vertigo Sea (2015) explores humanity’s tumultuous relationship with the sea and its creatures and the role that the ocean has in the history of slavery. We will orient ourselves to the themes offered by this film attuning to the poetics and histories of the sea-from its glittering surfaces and its unfathomable depths…The film is designed so one can join at any moment. We will watch for approximately 30 minutes. Mindful practices will bookend the film.
